Two new launches, one step closer towards a full constellation

Within the next two months, two new satellites will be launched to complement the existing seven satellites of the Argos Legacy Constellation. A major step for Kinéis towards a full constellation dedicated to the Internet of things (IoT).

Two new Argos-4 launches pave the way to the 2023 Kinéis nanosatellites constellation.

On October 5th , the “HOPS” satellite, from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will be launched from New Zealand to reach the low earth orbit and complement the already existing Argos 7-payload flying constellation.

Then in November 2022 it will be an Indian satellite, called OceanSat-3, that the Indian Space agency, the ISRO, will put into orbit for the benefit of the Argos community. Embedding CNES-made Argos-4 payloads, these satellites will improve the current data collection & localization services provided by Kinéis.

25% increase in daily coverage

These new payloads will reduce the revisit time by about 20%, before the launch in 2023 of the 25 Kinéis nanosatellites. On average, at the equator, the mean waiting time between two satellites passes will be reduced to 45 minutes, compared to 55 minutes today. This also greatly decreases the peak revisit time, from 6h now to 3h30 after these two launches. Overall, the daily coverage will be significantly improved, increasing by 25% the duration of the satellites visibility allowing to receive data.

A big step towards more capacity

This new chapter will also enable a significant increase in the overall system capacity. Additional onboard processing power and 9 times more frequency bands available will make a great step towards what the new constellation will bring in 2023. In addition, two new modulations open up the way for greater uplink transmission abilities, one dedicated to « very low power » applications (VLDA4), the other for higher Data Collection volume (HDA4), enabling an extended range from120 bps up to 4800 bps.

The final sprint towards the full constellation

This improvement in service comes at a strategic time, during which Kineis’ customers and partners will benefit from a better service, upgrading existing projects and paving the way for large-scale deployments. Along with new development possibilities, such as the recently announced partnership with STMicroelectronics, this major step will allow many new great projects to beacon alive. Then the future 25-nanosatellite additional constellation launched in 2023 will give satellite IoT a whole new world of possibilities.
